3D-printed, autonomous bus takes to the streets

minimalistic

A self-driving, 3D-printed electric shuttled introduced by Local Motors took its first passengers for a spin Thursday in Washington, D.C.

Partially recyclable, the autonomous bus is driving the company goal of reshaping the car manufacturing business, reported The Verge. To design the car, automaker used the unique learning platform of IBM Watson: The Watson Internet of Things for Automotive. Olli, as the self-driving minibus has been named, was the first vehicle created in this way at the 3D demo lab located just outside of Washington, D.C.

Even without a driver this bus will get to know its passengers, through sensors and speech-to-text features. Combined with other data, these technologies will allow users to build customized experiences - so much so that Olli will recognize favorite restaurants and commonly visited destinations.

Crowdsourcing for vehicle design plays a huge role in everything Local Motors does. Designed in just two weeks with a focus on keeping the automobile "simple" and "minimalistic." The designer of Olli, Edgar Sarmiento, told Tech Times that he sees it as one public solution for large metropolises. Looking ahead, Local Motors plans to bring autonomous buses to Miami and Las Vegas as well.

"Olli offers a smart, safe and sustainable transportation solution that is long overdue," said John B. Rogers Jr., CEO and co-founder of Local Motors.
